Original Vintage Portrait Painting By Simon Vanderlaan Pensive 1950s SV39. This original painting is from the Vanderlaan family estate. Simon Vanderlaan (1904 - 1986) was a listed artist and illustrator, known especially for his "pin up" artworks which appeared on advertising posters and calendars etc. Vanderlaan was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He worked at the Art Institute of Chicago in the mid-1930s. From 1940 - 45 he worked for Disney. After WWII, he taught art at Woodbury College in Southern California. Later, Vanderlaan became a self-employed advertising illustrator in Los Angeles, California. Vanderlaan was a very private man, who actually did not like to sell his paintings. After he died in 1986, all his remaining works were kept in storage by his family until the present. They are now being offered for sale for the first time in several decades.
