Get Vendio Gallery - Now FREE! AN ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING BY WELL-LISTED ARTIST PETER KEIL (1942-). VERY RARE LARGE CITYSCAPE SCENE. MUSEUM QUALITY WORK FROM PETER KEIL - SIGNED OIL ON CANVAS PIECE. This piece is unlike any other painting you will see from artist Peter Keil, done with much more detail and a more realistic style as opposed to his beautiful abstracts. It depicts a large cityscape scene that appears to be set in Germany, and features some great architecture all throughout the background. The main focus is on the figure in the center, who is well dressed and wearing a small mask, as he sits up high and looks down on the common/poor figures down below. There is also a heavy military and police presence within the scene, as well as a large wall that seems to separate the different classes of people.

In the background there is a plaza type setting, with large buildings and beautiful statues that stand tall over the city. Overall this is an extremely rare piece that highlights Keils more refined style, and it really looks amazing when displayed.

It consists of oil paint on a large sheet of canvas, has been signed by the artist on the reverse, and is guaranteed authentic with a certificate of authenticity from Rivertown Gallery! Does have some condition issues that are described below in detail. Please see below for more details on the size, condition & artist of this great painting.. Signed On The Reverse -' PETER KEIL BERLIN.

Measures - Approximately 79 1/2" x 80 1/2" Entire Canvas (77 1/2 x 78 1/2 Image Only). Medium - Oil Paint On Canvas. Painting is in vintage condition as highlighted. As you can see it was folded up at some point, so there are creases running across the canvas that have caused paint cracking along these lines.

Also has general craquelure throughout, some spots more noticeable than others. There is a small hole to the canvas to the left of the police officer, located within the gray pipe. Some general dirtiness and some scratches in a few spots. Painting was removed from a stretcher at some point, so there is a blank border around most of the image (except lower left) with holes. Overall an extremely unique piece that really stands out when displayed.

Unlike any other Peter Keil painting you will see for sale. Please see all of the close up photos to judge the condition better for yourself. Peter Keil was born in Züllichau. His family had to move after the death of his father to West Berlin, where he grew up. Young Keil was fascinated by the books he found in the art section of the local library. There he admired the works of the Expressionists.

In the beginning, Keil studied and copied the style of the great master Picasso whom he met in Spain. At the age of 15 in 1957 Keil met the painter Otto Nagel. Who became his first teacher and mentor.

Nagel introduced Keil to painting techniques, taught him realistic painting, and how to deal with colors. As a young man, Keil accompanied Nagel on his tours of Berlin's back streets. They often painted from nature and the young Keil learned to see his neighborhood with the eyes of an artist. Teaching him the painter's craft and introducing him to outdoor painting, Nagel also influenced his motifs as well as his color palette. Later, he studied at Berlin's "Akademie fur Bildende Künste" (Berlin Academy of Fine Arts).

Keil also obtained a degree as "Kunstschlosser" (art smith); several metal sculptures by Keil exist from 1959. In 1961 Keil attended Baselitz's and Schonebeck's public presentation of their "Pandemonium Manifesto" at the "Grossgroschen 35" gallery. He became the darling of art circles, earning him the nickname the'Wild man of Berlin for his passion for art and living.

Another important factor in those formative years of Keil's artistic development was his close friendship with the painter Joan Miró. Whom he had met in Majorca.

Spain in the early 1960s. Miro repeatedly invited him to his studio in Palma de Mallorca.
