Vintage ABSTRACT NEW YORK SKYLINE OIL PAINTING MID CENTURY MODERN Signed 1958. Wonderfully composed image of a twilight New York harbor and skyline. This oil on linen has an extremely matte finish giving the painting an almost illustrative look. Rich green to yellow light is seen glowing from the covered piers. Tiny red dots of light are seen at corner edges and peaks of industrial forms and architecture.
The trucated piers and water towers of the foreground give an unusual perspective of the city and its commerce. This simplified, yet striking image is a rare glimpse of mid-town Manhattan in 1958.
Exuberant in its detail, this work brings to mind the playful compositions of Stuart Davis. Signed and dated at lower right. Original Modernist Chestnut frame is raked and tinted with washes of blue-grey.
Large Scale: Measures 49" x 21" in frame. Painting is 36" x 24".
