Artist Richard Ruh Epperly, son of Charles Epperly and Mary Ruh, was born March 21, 1890 in Tallula, Illinois. He first became interested in art when, as a boy, he picked up a correspondence course in art discarded by his brother. He attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating with honors in 1914.

Epperly entered military service in 1918, spending the next few years in England and France. In France, he visited the Louvre and other museums and determined to return some day to study. Epperly, an accomplished artist in many areas, gained his greatest recognition as a portrait painter. Among his commissions were a portrait of Pope John XXIII and the family of former Ambassador Carlos Romulo in the Philippines. Today his work can be found in the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery and in many private collections.
