Beautiful painting of the California desert by Bertha Sessions. Formerly known as Bertha May Faris Davis prior to her second marriage. This painting, estimated from the late mid 20th century, features a stunning backdrop of sunlit mountains with native flora and fauna in the foreground, particularly a robust blooming tree, possibly a manzanilla or desert Willow. Painted on canvasboard and framed in it's original rustic gesso frame in a pale taupe color. Measures 30.5" X 24.5" framed and the art is 24" X 18". Bertha Sessions was born in 1884 in West Virginia and traveled to New York where she studied at the. She studied under Paul Grimm, and indeed some of her paintings are done in a similar style to his. Bertha Sessions moved to Los Angeles, California in 1929, where at some point after she remarried and became Bertha Sessions and moved to Santa Barbara, California where she passed away in 1974.
Painting is in excellent condition with some light, age appropriate wear such as a few chips in the paint along where the painting meets the frame (see last photos for reference) and on the left side there is wear from the frame (only seen when painting shifts slightly to the right within it's encasement) and the frame itself has some nicks and paint chips. Would benefit from a professional cleaning, as there is some yellowing (as can be seen in the photo of the upper left corner, where the paint from under the edge of the frame is lighter/cleaner in tone).
