VTG SIGNED ORIG OIL PAINTING SEASCAPE BY CONNECTICUT ARTIST LARS THORSEN. He worked various maritime jobs throughout his life including mess-boy, sail-maker, rigger, and Grand Banks fisherman. Thorsen lived most of his adult life in Noank, Connecticut. He had no formal art training but taught himself to paint while at sea. Thorsen became famous for his marine paintings and won the Bunce Prize from the Connecticut of Academy of Fine Arts in 1937.

Thorsen was a member of the Mystic Art Colony, which (along with the Lyme colony and others along the CT shoreline) flourished from 1898 on. Charles Davis started the movement to this seaside town (Mystic and Noank). Henry Ward Ranger was another Mystic painter. The Society of Mystic Painters was formed in 1914.

By 1930 the Mystic Colony had attracted national attention. Thorsen's paintings are now displayed at the Mystic Art Association Gallery, along with those of Reynolds Beal, G. Albert Thompson, Yngve Soderberg, Davis and Ranger. In 1939, Thorsen began work for the WPA Federal Arts Project, completing 81 works, many of which were allocated to the Rocky Hill Soldiers Home, Undercliff Sanatorium, Fairfield State Hospital, Mystic Oral School, Washington School, Connecticut State Farm for Women, Borough School, Connecticut National Guard Aviation Hangar, and Fort Wright on Fishers Island, New York. Thorsen died in New London, Connecticut in 1952. The oil on Masonite painting offered here is a gorgeous example of Thorsens seascape work, and depicts a group of small sailboats moored to a jetty beneath a vibrant and colorful sky. A palette of soft pastels in the sky and in the water dominates the composition, and gives the painting a lovely Impressionist quality. The painting is signed in paint in the lower left and again in pencil on the reverse of the frame. The painting is framed in a beautiful beveled giltwood frame that enhances the overall beauty of the composition.

Without the frame, the painting measures 12 x 14, and the overall framed dimensions measure 15.5 x 17.5. The condition of the painting is excellent.
