Igor Pantuhoff Big Eyes Girl Original Signed Oil Painting on Canvas Young Artist

Igor Pantuhoff was a well known fine artist; originally a surrealist painter who had studied under Hans Hoffman, and lived for a time with the artist, Lee Krasner and with critic Harold Rosenberg. However he is much better known for his paintings of big-eyed girls, similar in style to the paintings of Margaret Keane. I won't go into further detail on Igor Pantuhoff, because you'll easily find a lot more information on the artist online. The subject of the painting is an artist, a young girl working at her easel. She holds her palette in her right hand and her brush in her left.

Notice a nice detail: in the palette you can see that he used the end of his brush to draw into the wet paint. The "Young Artist" was a subject which Igor painted numerous times; you will readily find images of his paintings depicting young artists at work.

Honestly, I have not seen other examples as nice as this one. The setting seems to be a garret studio, light filtering in from the sloping, multi-paned window. Why are there cherries lying around on the floor and ribbons curling down from the ceiling? Your guess is as good as mine, but these are pretty typical details in his paintings. I bought the painting when my daughter was a baby and hung it in her room in the hope that it might encourage her to become an artist.

My daughter has long since grown and now, for better or worse, that hope was not realized. I would only add that your results may vary. The painting is signed in the lower right, and also signed on the back of the canvas, along with an address and what might be a date (though entirely illegible to me) below.

It's painted on what appears to be a nice quality linen canvas, tacked to the stretcher, keyed in the corners so the canvas remains quite tight. I could find no damage to the painting and have no reason to think that it looks different today from the way it looked when it left the 56th St.
