Such chests were family gift meant to last forever; thus, the quality of craftsmanship, though simple, is in general very good. The cabinet maker used dovetail joints on corners (see how the wood fits into place) this type of joint was done by hand until late 1800s. This chest is probably made from pine or tulip poplar.
When the chest opened there is a covered compartment (known as a till) to the left. Underneath, you can see two finished indentations, which were most likely used to hold a shelf.
It was common to use this space as a secret compartment for jewelry and other valuables. The hardware is iron: hinges, original key, lock, and handles. The key will still lock the chest! The top of the piece that surrounds the key has come away from the wood a bit.
