These patterns were touted and ultimately proved to be both "simple" and "accurate", and, as a result, the company developed a loyal following during the 1920s and 1930s. Excella was so sure of their product, that an ad during the time stated, "if you incurred any loss in creating a garment with Excella patterns, (we will) reimburse the customer for every penny of loss". Although the company was (most likely) absorbed by McCalls in the early 1940s, the brand lives on in the world of vintage fashion, being a favorite among many modern-day seamstresses. This sign is in exceptional condition, displaying a lovely cobalt blue background with white lettering which reads Excella The Perfect Fitting Pattern.
A white outer border encircles this wording. As with any reverse glass painted piece, the artist has illustrated the work, not on the front of the glass as is typical, but on the back facing forward.
As a result, the image shines through the glass oval, which measures 27 1/4" long x 9 1/2" wide. Attached to the back middle of the glass is a wooden panel, to which a retractable stand and hanging chain are affixed. Accordingly, the sign can be propped up or hung on the wall. The stand easily extends to a depth of 7 3/8, giving the heavy piece a firm base. Likewise, it can be securely hung with the well-attached chain, which extends a full 5 1/2 above the upper shoulder. Total weight of this sign is 4 lbs, 11 1/2 oz, with a retracted depth of 1. A few blemishes are noted upon close inspection, but these are essentially inconsequential.
They include a scattering of small nicks, scuffs and light scratches on the glass, as well a few gouges and scratches on the wood backing. Some of the paint has peeled off the left lower corner (see photo #9). With that said, we offer an exceptional, original piece, found recently at the estate sale of a longtime Spokane, WA antiques dealer who had recently passed. This is a very collectible sign of a company which, although it no longer exists, continues to be the definition of sewing pattern excellence. A beautiful piece that would make a wonderful gift to your favorite seamstress, who might just display it in her sewing room or shop.
Thank you for your interest in this piece, and have a wonderful day!
