Vintage 1940's Tom Roberts Framed Oil Painting Signed
We have an authentic and original vintage 1947 Thomas Keith Roberts Tom Roberts, b. 1998 oil painting in it's original frame.

We do not know the title at this time. There is information on the back of the frame that reads three titles with numbers. This painting is unique to Tom's regular subject of rural roads, fields and forests. A yellow 1940's pick-up truck is sleepily parked under a shelter belonging to a rural farm building.

The subjects and countryside, all depict a lifestyle of many North Americans. Tom's painting style and choice of color, is of a fauvism technique.

Made popular and a pure joy to look at by many 20th century artists, primarily members of the infamous Group of Seven, whom Tom admired and met with on occasion. The quality of this painting is pristine.

There are no aging flaws to report, no damage and no loss of color, paint or staining. Secure in it's original frame, this artwork measures 20 inches wide, 16.8 inches tall.

The Masonite board painting measures 13.8 inches long and 10.4 inches tall. Tom Roberts was born into an art family. His mother, Frieda Humme, was an artist, as was her father, Julius Humme, who was an original member of the Ontario Society of Artists.

Tom's grandfather on his fathers side was Samuel Roberts, who founded Torontos famous Roberts Art Gallery in 1842 (the gallery is still in operation). Toms father, Percy, later ran the gallery. From early boyhood, Tom spent considerable time at the gallery and had early ambitions of becoming an artist. Tom studied art at Torontos Central Technical School under Peter Haworth, Charles Goldhammer, Robert Ross and Carl Schaeffer.

That was followed by studies at the Ontario College of Art under F. Beatty, Yvonne McKague Housser and Fred Haines. By 1928, Tom was established as a freelance artist in the fields of commercial and fine art. He painted landscapes on the spot, mainly out-of-doors, which were selected for Christmas cards by several companies.

At the time, Tom created his easel paintings in watercolors, oils and later acrylics, for his varied subject matter of northern. Landscapes, town and country scenes in Ontario and subjects in Quebec and the Maritime Provinces. He also did interiors and experimental painting.

Tom's great influences were derived from French Impressionists, the Group of Seven and J. Beatty in particular, who had preceded the Group of Seven in the discovery of Northern Ontario for subject matter. Beatty inspired his students to use a brighter palette, something clearly seen here in Toms work. During the Second World War, Tom served with the Royal Canadian Engineers assigned to architectural drafting.

After a year, he was able to return to civilian life and resume his career as a full-time artist. These show a freedom in Roberts brush work, an increasing breadth of style and a newly vigorous color, like the painting we have here. Over the years, Tom moved towards simpler compositions. His rural scenes were enriched with children on their way to and from school.

His rural scenes were painted on locations across Canada but often in Ontario. He is well-known for his winding woodland roads edged with maple, birch, spruce and pine. Roberts autumn scenes in particular are filled with vibrant colors. By the mid 1980's, Tom had held over 32 gallery showings in Toronto alone.

He was a long-time member of the Ontario Society of Artists (joined 1944) and a Member of the Royal Canadian Academy (joined 1945). His work, whichned some five decades, is held in numerous public, corporate and private collections. This is an important representation of a true Canadian artist. Tom is a cherished painter and his work deserves to be displayed with appreciation.
