Vintage Mid Century Modern Water Rock Scene Painting Carved Frame Signed Croft
This is a signed abstract painting in a beautifully carved Mid Century Modern frame. The overall frame measures 18 3/8 inches wide by 15 1/2 inches high (46.7 cm x 39.4 cm). The painting and frame back opening size measure 12 inches x 9 inches (30.5 cm x 23 cm). The molding width measures 3 1/2 inches (8.9 cm).
The painting depicts what feels to me like Niagara Falls. It has rocks, water, fog, and depending on your interpretation, snow.
It is signed in the bottom right corner croFT. Lewis Croft (19111980) was active/lived in Massachusetts and Nova Scotia. He was known for abstract modern painting. There are numerous spots where the lighter colored paint is applied where you can see the beige colored hardboard canvas come through. I believe the paint chipped in these spots, though I initially thought it was done on purpose.
It does tend to just blend in with the painting though. As a frame lover, I was initially attracted to the frame. It is a beautifully designed piece with both a carved and textured finish. It has a linen liner with an interior gold accent strip. It's in very good condition with just some minor nicking.
On the back along the bottom is a long water stain. Fortunately, this does not affect the artwork or frame at all. The entire piece weighs 2 lbs.
