This is a beautiful impressionistic vintage oil on artist board painting depicting an ocean harbor lobster shack on Martha's Vineyard off of the coast of Massachusetts - on the reverse of the painting is written the word "Menemsha" which is a small harbor on the west end of Martha's Vineyard known for its artistic culture as well as its "laid-back" atmosphere - we know that the artist, Janet Reid (1894 - 1988), spent some time painting marine scenes from Martha's Vineyard up the Massachusetts coast to Gloucester & Rockport - certainly, she found Menemsha Harbor to be an excellent place to find subjects to paint. This very well-executed impressionistic marine painting was probably done by the artist during the 1950's - 1960's period although it is not dated by her signature in the lower right corner - the painting shows a very weather-beaten lobster shack in the foreground situated on an aged short wooden pier with a fishing sailboat tied up to the pier with its sails furled - to the left of the lobster shack is a large growth of ferns & other grasses which were very well done by the artist using a palette of diverse subtle shades of green - to the far left foreground one sees a short hill of sand which the artist created using a variety of muted brown & gray colors. The lobster shack & pier, were painted by the very talented artist using a diverse palette of browns, grays & blacks in her impressionistic style to depict a very weather-beaten & aged shack which appears to be leaning somewhat down towards the surface of the water - in the background, one sees more fishing shacks at the far end of the harbor cove which were well done in their smaller dimensions to create a sense of distance & space in the painting - the various shades of gray & white also help to create a sense of distance of the surface of the water - one senses in this picture that this scene took place on a somewhat dark summer day considering that the sky was done with dark white & gray colors with no blue to be seen.
The painting was done on a type of artist board & is in very good conserved condition - one can see that professional conservation was done on the reverse of the painting where one sees a rectangular structure made of pine strips to strengthen the artist board - one can also see that the surface of the painting has been re-varnished to protect the painted surface as well as to make the artist's original palette of colors stand out to the viewer - the painting measures 18" x 15" sight size, & is in excellent condition - the work is greatly enhanced by its silver over black painted wooden frame which has been "aged" on its outer edge to create a more vintage appearance - it is in excellent condition & measures 20" x 17".
