This magnificent Tiger Portrait by Arthur Wardle has been in my family since the 1920s, when it was in my fathers rooms at Princeton University. I have been fortunate to gaze at it for 70 years.

The Tiger is regal, proud and resting in a quiet moment of his life. His eyes look directly at the viewer without menace. The original frame is carved wood and is painted to compliment the subject. It resembles tiger fur and markings. A plain golden wood fillet allows space between the Tiger and the frame. 22 ½ x 30 ½H. 15 ¼ x 23 ¼H. Paper on the back side of the piece should be replaced. (18601949) was born in London, and at age sixteen had a piece displayed at the Royal Academy. His first exhibit was a study of cattle by the River Thames, leading to a lifelong interest in painting animals. Wardle was prolific; until 1936 he exhibited more than 100 works at the Royal Academy. He painted a variety of animal subjects with equal skill but his work may be divided into two categories, domestic and exotic; animals from overseas including leopards, polar bears and tigers. He is considered equally proficient in oils, watercolours and pastels and was elected to the Pastel Society in 1911. His work is recognized in the Tate Gallery and the National Museum of Wildlife Art, as well as museums in New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. As a pastelist, Wardle has taken a place in the modern British School which he can hardly be said to share with anyone else, a place gained by sheer strength of artistic personality. He has a brilliant appreciation of the genius of pastel...

He uses it with delightful dexterity. Alfred Lys Baldry, The Studio , July 1916, Vol. Most of our items have been in our family for many years, and some have been passed down for several generations.
