Whos Who in the South-Southwest. Arnholt, who was part Cherokee Indian, grew up in Ohio, but later in life spent nearly 25 years among the Seminole Indians in Florida. Eventually, Arnholt was made chief by the six Indian Nation Confederacy and named Chief Brave Runner. Arnholt was known for his oil paintings, pastels, charcoals, and watercolors of Native Americans, as well as Ohio and Southern landscapes. Arnholt was also known to have painted some religious murals around Ashland and Mansfield, Ohio. The oil on board painting offered here is a haunting example of Arnholts landscape work. Based on the date of the painting (1924), it is most likely one of his Ohio landscape paintings.The painting depicts a rutted, tree-lined dirt road that is beautifully crisscrossed with a latticework of shadows. The painting is signed Waldon in paint in the lower right. Inscribed in pen on the revers of the painting is the following information: Painted by Waldon Arnholt, Ashland, Ohio. The painting is framed in a period carved giltwood frame, and measures 11 x 14.5 without the frame, 14.5 x 18 with the frame.
While a light cleaning would help remove some surface dirt and brighten the colors even more, the painting overall is in very good original condition. This is a lovely painting by an artist whose work is rarely available to the public.
