She exhibited at the Society of Independent Artists in New York in 1937-38. Stry is best known for her small, impressionist seascapes and landscapes of Cape Cod, especially of Provincetown and Truro. She was also noted for her colorful still life.
She was married to fellow artist, Eric Stry who trained at the National Academy of Design. In 1923, she emigrated with her husband to the United States, arriving in Boston with the full name of Kaethe "Kay" Irene Augenstein Strueh. Naturalization and census records show that she was born December 24, 1904, but her grave site gives the birth date of 1899. Upon entering the United States, she and her husband both had their last name changed to Stry, and they petitioned for naturalization in 1939.
In New York City, her husband maintained a studio, and she worked as a freelance artist. Stry was listed in Davenport's Art Reference and Price Guide Gold Edition in addition to Who's Who. The original oil on board painting offered here is a lovely example of Strys Cape Cod seascape work, and depicts two masted fishing boats moored to a dock where seagulls flock over the water.The painting is signed Clair in the lower left. Inscribed in pen on the reverse is the following inscription: For Jon--(William Jonathan Acken) Cape Cod. Also Inscribed on the reverse, this time in pencil, is the following inscription: "To the Ackens--"Fishing Boats--Provincetown Harbor Mass.
The painting is framed in a beveled, oak frame. Unframed, the painting measures 9 x 12, and the overall framed dimensions measure 12.25 x 15.25. While there are some scuffs and scrapes on the frame, the painting itself is in very good original condition, although a light cleaning would help to brighten the colors even more. This is a beautiful painting by a talented and well-listed New England artist that would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
